Why ESG matters for Culture and why Culture changes ESG

April 2026

ESG: three letters shaping a new era. Yet, the cultural sector must ensure sustainability frameworks respect its unique mission and purpose.
Across Europe, these criteria guide investments, policies and strategies. But when ESG enters a museum, library or archive, the alignment is not automatic.
Most ESG frameworks are built for boardrooms, not galleries.
They chase financial risk, shareholder value and neat indicators.
But cultural institutions live by a different compass.
Their mission? Not profit, but public value.
Success is measured in access, trust, participation, and stewardship that lasts.
If we copy-paste ESG into culture, we risk turning real change into just another checklist rather than fulfilling the true promise of sustainability for the sector.
And yet, ESG matters deeply for the cultural sector.
Environmental sustainability can’t wait. Climate change puts collections, buildings, and heritage at risk.
Sometimes, old conservation practices clash with the need to cut emissions.
The big question: How do we protect the past, sustainably?
The social side matters just as much. GLAM institutions open doors to learning, inclusion, and connection. Their social mission grows stronger as divides deepen.
Governance is all about trust. Cultural institutions are stewards of our shared resources and collective memory.
Their foundation? Transparency and accountability.
ESG4GLAM shows that for genuine progress, sustainability and culture must work together.
When sustainability frameworks forget culture, they miss the spark that drives real change: how people live, act and believe every day. Culture shapes our values, our stories, our choices. It’s the bridge between policy and daily life. Put culture at the heart of ESG, and it stops being just a report.
ESG4GLAM directly supports the GLAM sector in applying ESG goals meaningfully. By redefining ESG through the lens of stewardship, the project helps institutions demonstrate their broader societal impacts.
They strengthen democracy, advance equity, and enable climate action within their unique missions. ESG4GLAM aims to provide GLAM institutions with new strategies for sustainable, measurable outcomes.
For culture and sustainability to thrive, the GLAM sector must take ownership and tailor ESG frameworks to their unique missions. Join ESG4GLAM to actively shape sustainability strategies that align with cultural values and make a measurable impact.
